FREE Home-Based COVID-19 Testing Kits
Free home-based COVID-19 testing kits are available through the Jefferson County Indiana Health Department, 715 Green Road, Madison. Patients with symptoms are asked to call the health department before arrival so that the testing kits may be brought your vehicle. Call (812) 273-1942.

Visiting Guidelines

Current COVID-19 visitation restrictions/guidelines are as follows:

Outpatient Departments / Provider Offices:
One (1) visitor/support person may accompany the patient to an appointment or office visit. For pediatric (minor) patients, two (2) visitors/support persons may accompany the patient to an appointment or office visit.

Inpatient Areas

  • Two (2) visitors/support persons may be in the patient's room at the same time. Visitors/support persons may change.
  • One (1) overnight support person will be allowed with the NKDH Visitor Pass process.
  • COVID-19 Patients: Patients being "ruled out" or positive for COVID-19 will be permitted to have no more than two (2) visitors/support persons at any given time and no overnight visits will be permitted. Each visitor/support person must review/sign the COVID-19 Guidance for Visitors policy prior to visiting the patient.

OB / Mother-Baby Unit (Maternity)
Three (3) designated visitors/support persons may visit. Each person must wear a visitor armband. In addition, a certified doula will be available to attend the birth as part of the medical team. This is supported by The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) and The Association of Women's Health and Neonatal Nurses (AWHONN).

  • The pregnant patient will need to determine who the three (3) designated visitors/support persons will be for her complete stay on the Mother-Baby Unit (OB Department)
  • Admitting or Charge Nurse will obtain the three (3) names and notify ED registration. The visitors/support persons must "check-in" at the registration desk where he or she will have a visitor armband applied.
  • Sibling visitation is allowed from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. only when Jefferson County, Indiana is not under COVID-19 yellow or red-level designation. Siblings should be healthy and pre-screened for active illness (runny nose, fever, etc.) prior to entering the unit. Siblings are required to be cared for by a caregiver other than the patient.

Emergency Department
If capable, the patient will determine who the contact person will be for the patient. If the patient is unable to decide on a contact person, then the patient's Power of Attorney (POA) will be the contact person. If the patient does not have a POA, the person who signed in the patient will be the contact person. This contact person will be the person updated on the patient's condition by staff. Other visitors will need to obtain information from the contact person.

  • Two (2) visitors/support persons may be in the room at one time. The visitors/support persons may change with approval of the ED staff.
  • Two (2) visitors/support persons will be allowed with a pediatric (minor) patient.
  • COVID-19 Patients: Patients being "ruled out" or positive for COVID-19 will be permitted to have no more than two (2) visitors/support persons at any given time and no overnight visits will be permitted. Each visitor/support person must review/sign the COVID-19 Guidance for Visitors policy prior to visiting the patient.

COVID-19 Patients - Actively Dying
For COVID-19 patients actively dying, the Director will determine whether additional visitor/support persons will be allowed. Each additional visitor/support person must review/sign the COVID-19 Guidance for Visitors policy prior to visiting the patient.
